

John Hawley, the founder of First Start Medical, started volunteering with the American
Red
Cross in the 1970s and became a full-time instructor in 1977. Since then, he has added Red Cross Disaster Class teacher
and Disaster Team member to his credentials. John was deployed as part of the Disaster Team to Great Barrington in 1995
to assist tornado victims.
As a First Responder Instructor/Trainer in 1988, John began teaching municipal employees and police recruits at the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council in Agawam. Seven years later, he was certified as an EMT Basic. In 2001, he successfully completed the Paramedic Certificate Program and has served as a Fire and Safety Officer for the Environmental Health & Safety Department at the UMass campus in Amherst since 2003.
In 2004, John started teaching first aid at Branford Hall Career Institute in Springfield. Later that year, he founded First Start Medical Training in order to teach everyday people how to save lives.
He is currently an EMT-P for the Belchertown Emergency Medical Service Team. When not on duty rendering emergency medical service, he runs First Start Medical Training.
